Joynagarer Moa and 10 other Items In-Line for GI tag

11 Items are queuing up in West Bengal after the Darjeeling tea to get GI tag. The documents of Geographical Indication of these items have been made already and they are soon to be applied. The Patent and Trademark Attorney of the Patent Information Centre of West Bengal Smt. Mahuya Hom Choudhury, confirmed the news about these items.

Joynagar Moa is one of the first items in line after the Darjeeling Tea that had been awarded the patent earlier. The famous Joynagar Moa (Joynagarer Moa) is a seasonal sweet preparation, which is made out of great care and delicacy of date palm jiggery along with a mixture of puffed rice in places in and around the Jaynagar near Kolkata. The application of the Joynagar Moa’s GI has been in line since last year when it was applied and is expected to be awarded the same soon.

Registrations for a few other items have been already completed which include three popular kinds of handloom sarees namely the Dhanekhali, Baluchari and Shatipur. The other items are yet to have the official registration and the patent officials are waiting for the state government to cooperate in filing and submission of the documents. “The only concern now is who will file for the documented and registered products,” said Choudhury during a seminar organized by CII and Intellectual Property Office.

The rest of the items in line are the Kankachur rice, Tulai Panji rice and some sarees including Tangail, Tangail Jamdani, Dhakai Maslin, Garad and Koral. The Assistant Registrar of the Trade Marks & Registry, IP Office of India Mr Chinnaraja G. Naidu said that a total of 189 items from all across India have been awarded with GI tag and more are being recognised.
