Kolkata to Get Back Its Double Decker Buses

The double decker buses which were once an integral part of transportation in the 20th century city streets can no longer be sighted at present but as per the vision of honourable Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee, regarding the metamorphosis of Kolkata into London, these buses are going to be reintroduced in Kolkata very soon.

The double decker bus transportation service was started in British India and it continued to exist until the West Bengal state government deemed fit to discontinue this service in the late 20th century considering it to be unviable. However according to the present Chief Minister of the state, the commencement of this service at present especially when the city is highly populated, will significantly contribute in favour of reducing road traffic by carrying double the number of passengers as compared to other buses running in the city roads.

The state tourism department is also going to reap their part of benefit from this service as provisions for separate double decker buses for tourism has been made which will be running exclusively to help tourists have a proper sightseeing tour of the city. Tourist spots like Victoria Memorial, Kalighat temples, etc. will be covered in this air-conditioned city bus ride and no other purpose apart from tourism will be entertained in them.

However, these buses are not readily available at present for starting the service and as a result, the city dwellers need to wait for some time after the state orders for the required number of buses. Since the top portion of these buses is handmade, the bus manufacturing company is going to take some time in order to deliver the ordered number of double decker buses to the state.
